During a visit with some friends in Bologna, in February 2024, I contacted Andrea Rubini who lives in Mantova, Italy, to see if he would be available for a short visit, and maybe record an interview.
Upon receiving a positive and enthusiastic response, I instantly bought train tickets for Mantova.
We went for a short stroll through the beautiful city center of Mantova with Andrea.
He shared great historical facts and information about the city, the surroundings.
On our way back to the shop, Andrea told me about how he met his good friend, Cristiano Canali, the nose behind the astonishing Rubini fragrances.
We stopped at a local cafe, where we had an amazing single origin coffee.
Mantova is a hidden gem. It definitely deserves a second, lengthier visit.
Andrea works in his family’s perfumery, Mirem, a store that was born in 1938, and was started by his grandfather, Pietro, in Verona. The perfumery moved to the perfect spot in Mantova, and ever since, it’s been one of the most well known perfumeries in Italy.
Andrea showed me around and we talked about his history, his sources of inspiration and even tested out some new stuff, that he is about to preview at the upcoming Esxence 2024*.

* Later Edit: In the meantime, Esxence 2024 took place in Milano and it already ended. Rubini presented a preview of the upcoming Hyperion fragrance, in collaboration with Cristiano Canali. Andrea Rubini aims for a release of Hyperion in the autumn of 2024.
